Primary Purpose:

 

Provide a comprehensive program of guidance and counseling to the campus assigned.  Include counseling services, state assessments, and a review of student records.  Provide a proactive guidance program to encourage all students to maximize personal growth and development. 

 

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

Master’s degree in counseling

Valid Texas counseling certificate

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of counseling procedures, student appraisal, and career development

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior

 

Experience:

Three years teaching experience

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

 

Instructional and Program Management

 

  1. Provide students with opportunities to complete higher-level course work that will enable the students to be eligible for certain financial aid and scholarship programs (TEXAS grant program).  All parents of secondary students must receive this information annually.
  1. Provide students with the four components (guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support) of a developmental guidance and counseling program.
  1. Assist teachers in the incorporation of guidance-related information into the academic curriculum.
  1. Counsel individuals and small groups and provide conflict mediation training for implementation between students, parents, and teachers.
  1. Participate in planning and evaluation of the campus/district standardized testing program.
  1. Interpret tests and other appraisal results appropriately.
  1. Plan, implement, and evaluate the school guidance and counseling programs to ensure that they meet identified needs of students.
  1. Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of the guidance program and make changes based on findings.
  1. Compile, maintain, and file all required physical and computerized reports, records, and other pertinent documents.
  1. Involve students in personalized educational and career awareness.
  1. Support teachers in teaching the knowledge and skills for both academics and counseling activities.
  1. Use accepted theories and techniques appropriate to school counseling.

  1. Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policies in the guidance and counseling area.
  1. Collaborate in the development and articulation of a common vision for academic achievement.
  1. Provide supportive collaboration by working with the classroom teachers to encourage parent participation in school activities.
  1. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data and extra-curricular activities) to determine the effectiveness and appropriateness of courses/programs for individual students.

 

 

Personnel Management

 

  1. Comply with applicable personnel policies.
  1. Maintain a communication system that effectively collects and disseminates information about students to other professionals as appropriate.
  1. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with other school professionals.
  1. Disseminate information that is learned on the job promptly to other professionals.

 

Administrative and Fiscal/Facilities Management

 

  1. Initiate purchase orders in accordance with budgetary limitations and district policies.
  1. Enforce safety standards appropriate for the campus.

 

 

Student Management Relations

 

  1. Comply with campus routines and regulations.
  1. Assist teachers in the student management process to enable the classroom to be conducive to learning that is appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  1. Use an effective referral process to help students and others use special programs and services.
  1. Collaborate with the campus administrator(s) for the scheduling of students into appropriate courses and programs.
  1. Conduct conferences with parents, students, and teachers concerning attendance, achievement, and behavior.
  1. Participate in the planning and evaluation of the school group standardized testing program.

               

 

School/Community Relations

 

  1. Consult parents, teachers, administrators, and other relevant people to enhance the work with students.
  1. Work with school personnel and school district residents to obtain resources for students.
  1. Articulate the district’s mission and goals to the community.
  1. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.
  1. Develop and maintain positive working relationships with representatives of community resources.

 

 

Personal Growth and Development

 

  1. Model behavior that is professional, ethical and responsible.
  1. Participate in professional development to improve skills related to the job assignment.
  1. Disseminate ideas and information to other professionals that will assist in the improvement of the performance of personnel.

                                

Student Performance

 

  1. Obtain and use student data to examine curriculum and instructional program effectiveness as related to student development.
  1. Promote academic progress and assessment performance to ensure success of students.
  1. Support the efforts of others to achieve district goals and objectives and campus  performance objectives for students.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities:

 

Supervise assigned counseling aide(s) and clerical employee(s).
