Primary Purpose:

 

Implement comprehensive program of health services for campus. Provide health services to students. Promote health education and preventive health practices for students.

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

Graduate of an accredited professional nursing education program or

Valid nurse license to practice professional nursing in Texas from the State Board of Nurse Examiners

Certified by Texas Department of Health to conduct vision and hearing screening and scoliosis screening

CPR Certification

Licensed Vocational Nurse required

Registered Nurse preferred

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of health appraisal to identify student health defects

Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Ability to implement policies and procedures

 

Experience:

Two years nursing experience, preferably in community health

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

 

Nursing Services

 

  1. Provide direct care utilizing professional assessment skills, the nursing process, and established school health protocols.
  1. Serve as health advocate for students and personnel.
  1. Notify parents/guardians of accident or illness and secure medical care for students in emergency cases (if parents or emergency contact cannot be reached).
  1. Coordinate management system to administer medications to students at school. Administer medications according to district policy and procedures.
  1. Establish and implement effective procedures for mandatory screening programs. Make referrals as necessary.

 

Instructional Management

 

  1. Produce and maintain appropriate and required records. 
  1. Develop and coordinate evaluation of the campus health program and recommend changes.
  1. Plan necessary time, resources, and materials to support the goals of the campus health program.
  1. Participate in development of campus health education curriculum and provide health education to individuals and groups.
  1. Coordinate with campus principal to accommodate temporary schedule changes and field trips.
  1. Provide instruction to faculty and staff as needed on health related topics.
  1. Provide health counseling and instruction to individual students.

 

School/Organizational Climate/Morale

 

  1. Promote a positive caring climate..
  1. Use effective communication skills.
  1. Serve as health liaison between school, physicians, parents, and community. 
  1. Establish and enforce standards of cleanliness, health and safety while following health and safety codes and regulations.
  1. Maintain a safe work environment.

 

School/Organizational Improvement

 

  1. Collaborate in the development and articulation of a common vision for the district.
  1. Assess student problems and make appropriate referrals working with students, teachers, parents, and medical and health care professionals as needed.

 

Personnel Management

 

  1. Comply with applicable personnel policies. 
  1. Collaborate with other professionals regarding implementation of health-related Individual Education Plan (IEP) modifications.
  1. Participate on the Individual Education Plan Committees, crisis teams, and school committees as needed.

 

Administrative and Fiscal/Facilities Management

 

  1. Develop and monitor the campus nurse/health operating budget.
  1. Maintain accurate reports of daily and monthly student health records. 
  1. Review and evaluate immunization records.
  1. Supervise and train nurse aide(s) and LVN(s) in clinic procedures and responsibilities according to district policy as required.
  1. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required, including clinic records and accurate, updated health records on students on specific campuses.
  1. Requisition supplies and equipment needed to maintain clinic inventory.
  1. Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of Health rules, State Board of Education rules, and board policy in the health services area.

 

Student Management Relations

 

  1. Demonstrate support for the district’s student management policies and expected student behavior.
  1. Support the improvement of the attendance of students.
  1. Participate in assessment and reporting of suspected child abuse.
  1. Communicate regularly with principal, head nurse, school counselor, teachers, parents, food services, and other staff regarding student health services issues.
  1. Make home visits to help with student health problems as necessary with permission of the principal.

 

School/Community Relations

 

  1. Serve as a liaison to the appropriate community agencies.
  1. Use appropriate and effective techniques to encourage parent/community involvement.
  1. Maintain good rapport with parents, community, and school personnel.

 

Professional Growth and Development

 

  1. Attend professional growth activities to keep abreast of health regulations/half Continuing Education
  2. Units should be in school health.
  1. Maintain certification in CPR, vision and hearing screening, and as a health screener.
  1. Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

 

Student Performance

 

  1. Support the campus academic program to ensure success of students.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

If student numbers require additional health professionals, direct the work of licensed vocational nurse (LVN) and assigned health clinic aide(s).

 

Working Conditions

 

                Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

                Maintain emotional control under stress.

                Exposure to bacteria and communicable diseases.

                Perform other duties as assigned.

                Report to work on time and absent with a good cause.

 

Equipment Used:

 

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, audiometer, otoscope, sphygmomanometer, vision screening equipment, thermoscan, gluometer, scoliometer, basic clinic equipment, personal computer, and copier.
